WHO MADE HOLLYWOOD DANCE?
Sat 23 May I 13.00 – 15.00 I Main Lecture Theatre, Edinburgh College of Art I £6
With Agnes Ness

Choreographers and dance directors were seldom listed in the credits for the early Hollywood musicals in spite of the major and sometimes innovative contribution they made to dance in film. Everyone knows the name Busby Berkeley; fewer people would recognise the names Dave Gould and Hermes Pan who did the choreography for The Gay Divorcee which saw the beginning of the wonderful Astaire/Rogers dancing partnership. This talk, illustrated with clips from the dance films of the 30s, 40s and 50s,will throw some light on these choreographers and at the same time afford the opportunity to enjoy seeing some of the greatest dance talents ever recorded on film.
Agnes is a freelance lecturer in art and dance history and currently teaches Contextual Studies and Dance Appreciation at Dance for All and various dance-related courses for the OLL department of Edinburgh University.
