HOW TO CREATE MOVEMENT FOR THE CAMERA LAB
With Stuart Hopps and Sandy Strallen
Thursday 28th May, 10.00-18.00, Dance Base

This is a fantastic professional development opportunity for 4 choreographers and 3 filmmakers to work with two experienced artists to investigate the processes involved in choreographing for the screen and capturing choreography on the screen.

Participants will investigate the following themes:

1) How does the dance appear and disappear on the screen? i.e. How does the screen differ from the stage where dancers either enter the space or the curtain goes up and we all see them?

2) How do we capture speed of movement i.e. does the camera or the dance create the sense of speed?

3) How do we capture isolation as well as total bodily activity?

4) How does camera front differ from stage front?

How does the eye of the camera change the choreographic process? Most choreographers working in dance will be creating for studio/theatre spaces: i.e. a proscenium arch situation. When you work on a film set, you are released from that spatial restriction. You often have a fourth wall which is removable, so you can always shoot against a background. This workshop will get choreographers thinking differently about space and dynamics, rhythm and time.

For the filmmaker, how do the choices made by the choreographer drive the shooting options of the cinematographer?  If the cinematographer feels that close engagement inside the dance energy is required, then how does this affect choreographic choices, practically and in terms of movement design? What joint methods are best employed to transcend the resource, location and performer limitations which are always part and parcel of every process?
