"In the sense that I observe and collect material before I have a form for it, my films develop in a non-linear way. I assemble the images in the editing process, choreographing them to a soundtrack or voiceover. What interests me is that way that these often unrelated images and sounds converge. They can generate atmospheric projections and identifications. We seem to seek out and create narratives even in the most jumbled sequences of visual fragments.
There are two emotional strands to my work – one that appears to run through the films, evoking the characters’ subjective experiences, and one that the viewer feels in trying to catch hold of the narrative as it flashes past. On a certain level, I think this might relate to the sublime – understanding that it is impossible to have a complete grasp of what is happening, while recognizing, poignantly, that one’s desire for identification is undiminished."
