Pina Bausch

Dir: Anne Linsel. German with subtitles, Germany. 2006, 44 mins

Anne Linsel’s documentary provides a fascinating insight into the life and art of German choreographer Pina Bausch whose sudden death in June last year was mourned across the world. Before Pina Bausch and her Tanztheater Wuppertal became internationally known her new and unusual and original body language was ill-received. In this documentary Pina Bausch talks about the beginnings of the Tanztheater Wuppertal and the inescapable path she felt she had to follow.

Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch: Le Sacre du Printemps

Dir: Pit Weyrich. Music: Igor Stravinsky, Germany 1976, 36 mins

Premiered in Wuppertal in 1975, Pina Bausch’s legendary interpretation of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre Du Printemps was brought to the Edinburgh International Festival in 1978 and has since been seen at numerous venues across the globe. The film was originally produced for German TV (ZDF).

Welder by day, club dancer by night. Oh yes, that’s Flashdance for you in a nutshell. One of iconic 80s cheesy dance films and the closing film of DANCE:FILM 09, Flashdance follows Alex as she dreams to be a dancer and to be accepted into the dance conservatory. But surely a welder who dances in a nightclub can’t do that? Of course you can, with a little help from her boss whom she falls in love with. You just can’t beat the 80s-ness of the film with a cracking soundtrack to match. So come along and be a maniac!

With Claricia Kruithof, ALL LEVELS, Age 16+

It’s time to take a step back into the 80s with one of the most popular films of the decade. Flashdance touches our hearts because it allows us to believe that we can all achieve something despite our limitations. It doesn’t matter if you are a welder by day – you can still be a kick-ass dancer! This workshop will bring out your inner dancer, turning you into an 80s jazz-tastic extrovert who leaps and slides and jumps and dives! Dressing up is totally acceptable and if you have something you can strip out of (like overalls, labcoats, scrubs, aprons etc) it may enhance your transformation! What a feeling!
